RM4

Reference: RM4 / Cat. No.

Period: Roman

Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, probably Levant

Date: 70 – 150 AD

Description:
On shoulder: two labrys (double-headed axe) motifs.

Base marked footprint ('planta pedis').

Manufacture: Mould made.

Condition: Most of nozzle and handle missing.

Notes:
Cf. (body) Bailey, Sidi Khrebish, C691; Met, New York, 74.51.2177; Djuric, C172; Topoleanu & Croitoru, Brăila 2015, 22; Dobbins, Tel Anafa II, L428; (mark) BMC III, Q2295, Q2298, Q2300.
The distinctive variety of planta pedis mark on the base is identical to those on some other contemporary types of lamp from the Levant.

Comments:
The double-headed axe was a popular symbol in parts of the eastern Mediterranean area and their common placement as paired motifs on the shoulder of pottery lamps from this region may have been inspired by the suspension lugs on metal counterparts.
