BI2

Reference: BI2 / Cat. No.

Period: Byzantine / Islamic

Origin: Levant, probably Syria

Date: 550 – 800 AD

Description:
The top surface of the lamp is divided into two concentric bands containing Greek inscriptions.

Manufacture: Mould made.

Condition: Inscriptions blurred.

Notes:
Cf. BMC IV, Q2329 quater; Djuric, C247-8; Kennedy, 818; Rosenthal & Sivan, 581; Israeli & Avida, 488.
Type: see Lafli & Buora, PAM 2019, pp.161-8.

Pub: D. Knell, 'Ancient Pottery Lamps', Antique Collecting, June 2004.

Comments:
Although the Greek inscriptions here are largely illegible, the few letters discernable indicate that they probably followed the standard formula on similar lamps. The outer circle would contain the phrase "The blessing of the Mother of God be with us" and the inner circle the phrase "Inscription of John".
