Home > Antiquities > Lamps > Late Roman / Byzantine Click images to enlarge Reference: LRB208 Byzantine Christian lamp with face on handle Period: Byzantine Origin: Northern Levant (Antioch area) Date: Late 5th - 6th century AD A well-documented type from this region, the thick trangular handle of this example features a human face. The faces on these lamps clearly have a Christian significance but their identity is uncertain. The body of the lamp is typical of the type: waisted top surface, steep shoulders and ring base. On this example a few traces of the dark red slip have survived on the mould join and elsewhere. Manufacture: Mould-made Size: Length 11.3 cm Price: Sorry, this item has been sold. Notes: Cf.
