Henty & Jackson - Ancient Art, Antiques and Antiquities
ABOUT US | CONTACT
David Knell is a former Sotheby's
consultant and a published historian.
He was born in England but has sampled the cultures of other countries from an early age. Two of his earliest years
were spent in Singapore (he learned to count in Chinese before he could in English) and most of the remainder of
his childhood and adolescence was based in Canada, first in Montreal and later in Toronto.
One of his major interests has been in English vernacular furniture. In addition to contributing many articles on
the subject to various periodicals and academic journals, he wrote a monthly column in a specialist magazine and
has had several books published, one of which is the standard reference work in that field. He was formerly a specialist
expert to Sotheby's and is presently the furniture consultant to the Mary Rose Trust.
Another major interest lies in Classical lychnology, and he brings the same devotion to detail and accuracy to this subject
that he brought to furniture. Having already published articles on ancient lamps, he is currently working on a book. His
expertise is widely recognised by professionals and he has acted as referee for the Royal Archaeological
Institute.
